The river Shebelle and the excessive rainfall give rise to flooding

River Shebelle is rising water at highest level and the heavy rainfals has already caused catastrophic floods in different locations in middle shabelle region Jowhar and Mahaday districts the floods affected number of villages, the floods resulted displacement, loss of properties, isolation of village, destruction of farmlands product ,more so the heavy rains embaded the main road links to Mogadishu and central regions for two positions Garsale and Qalimow, huge water of rains created flash floods and cut of the road, and also it is raining this may increase the next days, the reports coming from Hiraan region says that the River shabelle extremely rising water at abnormal , since Ethiopian highlands have heavy rains and this resulted the town of Baladwayn River shabelle flooded.

The heavy rains and river flooding caused Catastrophic flood that lead Disease outbreaks such as Water borne illnesses that resulted Cholera, AWD and vector borne illnesses such as Malaria affected the vulnerable groups. High rates of food insecurity persist in the region and further weaken the resilience of displaced communities. Elderly, woman, girls and young children are particularly vulnerable.

ORDO emphasized the importance of urgent assistance and said “Given the grim realities, it is imperative that efforts to mitigate and minimize human suffering be timely and effectively coordinated. After conducting a rapid assessment in the said villages in Middle Shebelle Region affected by the river flooding and heavy rain falls, we are urgently calling for an emergency humanitarian assistance to address urgent needs of IDP households in the region.

Civic Education and transparency

ORDO has experience in civic education having carried out various capacity building programs for local authorities. The aim of the civic education was to empower the local authorities in issues related to good governance and the rule of law. ORDO advocates for Democratic self-government means that citizens are actively involved in their own governance; they do not just passively accept the dictums of others or acquiesce to the demands of others. ORDO empowers citizens are to exercise their rights and discharge their responsibilities as members of self-governing communities

Highlighting human rights violations

ORDO continues to make positive contributions by perpetually highlighting human rights violations and the deteriorating security situation affecting the majority of citizens. Specifically ORDO, has renewed sense of commitment and partnership that seeks to build on their individual successes and aims to provide a stronger, better coordinated forum through which Somali women and men can proactively take part in seeking lasting solutions to the political, social and economic problems that have left Somalia one of the worst humanitarian and political crisis in the world.

Income Generation programs

In 2004, ORDO, and UNICEF jointly rehabilitated the Youth Multipurpose Centre (YMPC) in Jowhar to provide a space for the youth to engage in recreational activities that are non-threatening and that promote positive development. Today, this centre consists of a theatre with a capacity to accommodate an audience of more than 200 people, a meeting hall, and a playground, a room for indoor recreational activities and/or Non Formal Education (NFE) classes, a counseling room and an Internet café. UNICEF provided a TV set, a VHS set, a projector, a desktop, a printer and library books, while ORDO installed cabling for internet services and provided 10 computers equipped with internet capacity.

Community Relief and Rehabilitation

In 2014, ORDO, with the financial support of WFP, implemented a food provision and rehabilitation programs aimed at supporting and restoring food security, nutrition and establish or build livelihoods in fragile settings. This program improved the socio-economic situation of 800 women and contributed towards food security at the household level through a Food – for – Work Program. Our income generating programs focus mainly, though not exclusively, on women and girls affected by the war, who in Somalia, make up the main breadwinners of the family unit.

Awareness on HIV/AIDS

Through this program, in partnership with the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), ORDO has mobilized in the fight against HIV/AIDS, through awareness creation on methods of prevention, treatment and care. The overall objective of the project is to build the capacity of women (including young girls) and CBO’s through education/awareness raising, to generate dialogue and advocate for action to reduce women’s risks of contracting HIV/AIDS, by identifying and combating the multiple vulnerabilities of contracting the disease. Additionally ORDO seeks to supply the required healthcare and information to people leaving with disease and work to eliminate the stigma associated with it.
